MIP charge in San Francisco?

If this is filed as a misdemeanor, you should be represented by counsel and you will be entitled to appointed counsel if you cannot afford an attorney. If it is filed as an infraction (they usually are), you will not be entitled to appointed counsel, but you might want to at least consult with one. You are correct that the major consequence of conviction of this offense (as a misdemeanor or infraction) is a one year drivers license suspension. However, most courts do have some kind of diversion program (at least for first offenders) which results in dismissal of the charge. You, or your attorney, should check that out.
